When you file a worker’s compensation claim, you might be required to attend an independent medical examination (IME). IMEs are usually requested when there is a question or a dispute about whether you are entitled to benefits or not. Your IME will play a huge part in being approved for worker’s compensation benefits, and that is why our attorney has come up with the following guide to help you handle your IME

Tips to prepare you for the IME:

  • Know your medical history – The doctor is likely to ask you several questions about your condition and medical records, including any previous injuries to the injured body part. It is important to review your medical history before attending your IME. Keep in mind that you should never downplay or try to conceal your previous injuries, but you can and should talk about how your current injury differs from past injuries.
  • Review all of the details of the accident – Be prepared to give detailed answers about specific questions regarding the accident, which are designed to ensure that the injury was indeed work-related. The IME examiner will be looking for inaccuracies and inconsistencies while you recount your story, so it is important to keep your answers brief and truthful.
  • Be prepared to talk about your symptoms – You will be asked about your current limitations and symptoms, and it is important to tell the examiner everything, no matter how small.
  • Familiarize yourself with your treatment – Know what treatments, like surgeries, tests and procedures, you have had so far. This isn’t a memory test, so don’t worry if you can’t remember specific dates, but you need a general knowledge of your treatment.
