Your IME is important for worker’s compensation.

If you have had a chance to read our latest blog, then you already how what an independent medical examination (IME) is and why it is important for your worker’s compensation benefits. We also went over a few tips on how to prepare for your IME. Keep reading to learn more!

Tips on what you should do during your IME:

  • Be respectful and polite – Although this should be common sense you would be at surprised how often claimants will go into their IMEs with a bad attitude. Just because the doctor was hired by your employer or the state doesn’t mean that they are necessarily out to get you. Keep in mind that even if your examiner is rude, your hostility will only make matters worse.
  • Don’t exaggerate or tell tall tales about your symptoms – Examiners have methods and tests that will help them determine your honesty when reporting range or motion, pain and other symptoms, so it important to always be honest.
  • Be honest about all of your limitations – Don’t try to make your injury seem worse than it is by exaggerating your limitations. It is not uncommon for the state’s worker’s compensation agency to take video surveillance of claimants, so it is important not to lie about limitations.
  • Distinguish between your current and previous injury – If you have had a previous injury to the same body part as your current injury, be prepared to be questioned about it. As we mentioned in our last blog, you shouldn’t try to downplay or cover up the previous injury, but you can certainly distinguish between your current and previous injury.
