For two generations, the Sullivan Law Office has provided Louisville with attorneys that combine a genuine, caring manner with knowledge and experience second to none. The application process for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is never routine. Our attorneys can effectively guide you through this process while patiently answering all of your questions at each and every stage. One of the important things to know during this process is how an award of one benefit affects status and eligibility for the receipt of another. Specifically, how an award of SSI affects someone’s eligibility to receive, or continue to receive, Medicare and Medicaid benefits.
Supplemental Security Income provides monetary and medical benefits to adults and children who are disabled or blind and who have also met the non-disability income and asset/resource requirements imposed by the State of Kentucky. Individuals that are disabled and approved for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits receive Medicare, while those approved for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) receive Medicaid. However, recipients of SSDI aren’t eligible to receive Medicare benefits until two years from the date of their entitlement. Medicare coverage for SSI recipients does not occur until an individual reaches the age of 65.
There is no waiting period for recipients of SSI to receive Medicaid. In most states, once you are awarded Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you immediately become eligible for Medicaid. Of course, individuals with lower incomes may still apply for Medicaid regardless of whether or not Social Security has awarded any SSI benefits. Since it’s possible to receive Medicaid benefits before a decision has been rendered on an SSI application, it’s wise to apply for Medicaid when first applying for SSI benefits. The benefits received through Medicaid vary from state by state. States are required to cover certain mandatory benefits and can choose to provide other option benefits through the Medicaid Program.
